Organization of the World Environment Day in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The main objective of this project is to support Bosnia and Herzegovina achieve its environmental goals, sustain the tradition of World Environment Day celebrations that will raise general awareness on environmental issues and a better understanding of economic possibilities in existing or to be proclaimed protected areas.

World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries including Bosnia and Herzegovina. Unfortunately, in May 2014, BiH was affected by unprecedented floods, which led to disastrous landslides, and resulted in considerable human and economic losses. Taking into consideration those circumstances, the character of celebration of WED BiH 2014 was adjusted. Instead of the traditional celebration, a charity auction was organized in order to provide support to the most vulnerable part of the population affected by the floods - children.

WED BiH 2014 Event, celebrated on 5th of June in Austrian Embassy was organized by UNEP with technical support and assistance of eia. The main activity was focused on the charity auction of photographs of landscapes in BiH taken by BiH photographers. The photographs were exhibited in the Austrian Embassy during the Event. All participants to the Event had the opportunity to see the photographs and provide their proposal for the auction. The highest bidder was given the right to buy the chosen photographs. All collected funds were given to the SOS Children’s Villages BiH. The collected funds were intended for the reconstruction of the kindergarten in Maglaj, which was destroyed in the recent floods.
